Girls Groove's mission is to prepare teenage girls in underserved areas in Washington, D. C. for careers in music production. This goal will be achieved through hands-on training using industry standard equipment and software.

My name is Holly Baynham and I formed Girls Groove when I realized that women in the audio technology field were grossly underrepresented. Of the more than 12,000 audio engineers employed in the US, less than 8 percent are women. As an audio technology graduate student at American University, I was often the only female in class and recall feeling intimidated. I was so gripped by intimidation that I lacked the confidence to believe I was as capable as the male students.
By the age of 13, many girls feel insecure about pursuing careers in technical areas and will shy away from these types of professions. With regard to audio technology, many girls are not aware that careers in audio technology exist. I wanted to help reverse this trend and offer girls an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of audio technology.
Girls Groove Inc will target girls between the ages of 13-18 in underserved areas of Washington, D.C. The girls will apply to be in the 12 week immersive program and will be chosen based on criteria formed by the Girls Groove board. The training will be held in a recreational vehicle converted to a professional recording studio. This mobile studio will be a smaller version of the Lennon Educational Bus (lennonbus.org). At the end of the program participants will use their new skills to run a recording session of a band in the Washington Metropolitan area.
We believe the skills the participants learn from the Girls Groove program will build creative and confident female engineers dedicated to effective communication and collaboration in the music production environment.
